I recently made part of one of their tours on the the north of Portugal and the experience was overwhelming! Amazing hotels, roads, sightseeing places! Everything was perfect! Thanks for the unforgettable weekend! Maybe Morroco :. Interesting museum really far from Lisbon. We went there because it was close to our hotel. But we found it really interesting that worth a visit!
Arruda dos Vinhos Municipality (Portugal)
Here, the visitor can discover the military defense system that dictated the withdrawal of the Napoleonic army of Portugal , in what became known as the 3rd French invasion. Visit it in the Historical Centre and consult the conditions for groups, kids, and seniors. Ben organizzato.
The historic DOC or viticultural area of Bucelas has produced wines of note since the time of Lord Wellington , and in particular, the Arinto grape variety is said to have been born here. The modest but well-done museum in Bucelas gives a thorough overview of the region, the grapes, the local winemaking process, and the people. Great examples of the lagares and wine presses used to create local wines are on display. The only concern for non-Portuguese speakers is that most of the displays are in Portuguese.
The first of four wineries we visited, a short drive from Lisbon, the web site did not say much, google maps showed a run down looking industrial wine production unit, nothing like you would find in the Medoc region or anywhere in Bordeaux for that matter. With much misgiving, we made the journey by car. The previous day I called and spoke to Rodrigo and confirmed that we would be coming, we were late but no issues, we were the only visitors!.
Its located on the main road, when you get to Arruda dos Vinhos, drive through, the road then turns left up hill, at this point go straight on and carry on until you come to three desolate looking buildings on the left. Rodrigo then talked us through their production process, we are talking many million liters of wine but small when compared to the likes of De Fonseca and Bacalhoa which we also visited. The cooperative consist of some hundred members who supply the grape, so the success or failures on the part of the vine making process determines the success or failure of each of the vineyards.
Interesting large concrete vessels and stainless steel cylinders that had electrically driven degree stirrers, not something you would encounter in Bordeaux. I guess the cooperative with the backing of members, it is possible to invest in this type of technology but no optical quality checking of the grapes, no hand picking either.
We were taken to the very large middle building and was surprised to learn that it held many below ground storage tanks holding ten's of thousands of liters of wine. We tasted the reds and was astonished to learn the price, incredible value and very good vine it was.
Sadly we could only buy two bottles which was all we could bring back with us to the UK. I believe there are three other similar cooperatives in the region, as with this coop, I think they all deserve a visit. There is no charge and even though it was just the two of us, Rodrigo went to a lot of trouble to explain all, I think we were there for an hour and half or more, many thanks.

Rodrio did say that they had a booking for 50 visitors on the Sunday, so those in the know do take the trouble to visit and support the coop. The web site needs updating as do their premises and with a bit more investment in marketing their product, the coop should achieve a well deserved greater prominence in the world of Portuguese wine. A good few photos to upload but the option to do this is not available.
