English French German Italian. My first real foray into the realms two classic Hollywood stars Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn and right from it's amazing opening credits to closing image, it pretty much ticked all the right boxes in terms of things I enjoy; witty dialogue, pulpy mystery complete with more twists than the average pretzel, writing and pacing as sharp as a butcher's knife, and a terrific jazzy score by the fantastic Henry Mancini. Grant himself is sells himself as a charming leading man, but it's Hepburn that really blew me away.
Her ability to convey so much expression with her face is breathtaking as well as completely adorable, not to mention her fantastic line delivery of so many wonderful back and forth….
Oh, my word. The banter. The banter in Charade is amazing. Hepburn and Grant's delivery of Peter Stone's dialogue is magical. From the ski chateau introduction to the embassy denouement, every time Stanley Donen closes the door and keeps his eye on Hepburn's Reggie and Grant's Peter, I wanted to shut the film off so as not to spoil the perfection I saw and heard.
The most marvelous thing about the words spoken is not only their wit and romantic subtext, but the defiance of lingering on a gag or bit of wordplay and moving onto the next line. Though the plot might resolve itself to a satisfactory conclusion, I can already foresee coming back to the one to discover….
The mind does wander Sometimes when a feat is made to look easy, we notice and say so as the highest of compliments. Other times we mistake the appearance of simplicity for simplicity itself.

I think it's fascinating how, on social media at least, Hepburn has become a kind of stand in for flawless grace, when her on screen persona could be so hilariously weird. Cary Grant seems to be delighted to return to Hawksian screwball comedy stylings.
The dialogue in this is excellent. Wonderful mystery, chemistry and magic.

Punchy dialogue between Hepburn, Grant, and a stoic Matthau. See it with someone you love. One hell of a caper that turned my brain into pile of goo thanks to its screenplay, which has more twists and turns than the streets of Paris.
